The Role of Biodiversity for the Functioning of Rocky Reef Communities

چکیده
A major focus of ecological research has been on understanding the processes that determine the diversity of organisms at a particular location (Hutchinson 1959) . Many important classic studies elucidating these local-scale processes have been conducted in marine hard-bottom communities (e.g. Kitching and Ebling 1961 ; Paine 1966 ; Menge and Sutherland 1976 ; Connell 1978 ; Lubchenco 1978 ; Sousa 1979 ; Fletcher 1987) . These studies and subsequent work have shown that diversity in rocky intertidal and subtidal systems is regulated by a combination of abiotic (e.g. disturbance, productivity, nutrient availability) and biotic (e.g. competition, consumption) processes (Worm et al. 2002 ; Nielsen 2003 ; Graham 2004 ; Bracken and Nielsen 2004 ; see Part II of this book). However, the organisms inhabiting these ecosystems are not only influenced by the performance of the systems—they also, in part, determine it. Growing evidence from a variety of systems indicates that organisms, by virtue of their roles in mediating ecosystem performance, influence the rates of biogeochemical processes, stability, and other attributes of the ecosystems in which they live (Naeem 2002 ; Kinzig et al. 2002 ; Cardinale et al. 2006) . Because of the unique roles that different organisms play in mediating ecosystem performance, there is a growing awareness that the diversity of organisms in a system can influence that system’s performance (reviewed in Hooper et al. 2005) . Recent studies have illustrated several key ways in which organisms inhabiting temperate and tropical reefs—and, by extension, the diversity of those organisms—influence the performance of marine ecosystems (reviewed in Worm et al. 2006) . Below, we review studies from hard-bottom marine ecosystems and provide suggestions for future research into the functional roles of marine biodiversity in temperate and tropical hard-bottom communities. Accumulated evidence and theoretical reasoning suggest that the diversity of benthic communities may be an important property for the functioning of these ecosystems.

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...
متن کاملMussel reefs in sub-littoral zone-An important habitat for infaunal and ichthyofaunal diversity
A Sub-littoral mussel reefs harbours rich and diverse invertebrate communities. They utilize the reef complex as their habitat, rich feeding substrate and also as refuge from predation. Though the invertebrate diversity of the reefs is available, reports pertaining to their relation to dietary habit of reef fishes are lacking. A study was taken up at the sub-littoral mussel reefs occurring off ...
متن کاملEvaluation of ecological status of the Persian Gulf inshore waters (Hormozgan rocky bottoms) using macrophytic communities and a macroalgae biological index, EEI
Marine benthic macrophytes (seaweed and seagrasses) are key structural and functional components of some of the most productive ecosystems of the world. They absorb nutrients through their surface directly from the marine environment and thus they are very important biological elements for the estimation of ecological status, representing reliable indicators of coastal waters. The aim of this s...
متن کاملArtificial Coral Reefs as a Method of Coral Reef Fish Conservation
2 Biodiversity is an important factor in all healthy ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support an incredibly diverse community of fish species. As coral reefs are in decline due to a combination of factors such as climate change and over fishing, the species which are being supported by the reef are at risk. In particular, coral reef fish communities have been shown to be in decline. Coral reef...
متن کاملHigh Biodiversity on a Deep-Water Reef in the Eastern Fram Strait
We report on the distribution and abundance of megafauna on a deep-water rocky reef (1796-2373 m) in the Fram Strait, west of Svalbard. Biodiversity and population density are high, with a maximum average of 26.7±0.9 species m(-2) and 418.1±49.6 individuals m(-2) on the east side of the reef summit. These figures contrast with the surrounding abyssal plain fauna, with an average of only 18.1±1....
